Cognitive functions are the mental processes that helps to perceive the links between events or states, compare, recognize similarities and differences, code information in its shortest form, categorize, group, recall and retrieve information (Estes, 1982; as cited in Haywood & Lidz, 2007). As those processes are the prerequisites for thinking and learning, dynamic assessment of cognitive functions makes it possible to see how one employs his/her cognitive functions in order to identify and meet his/her individual needs (Haywood & Lidz, 2007). In previous studies focusing on cognitive development which is closely related to thinking and learning processes (Hall, Sylva, Sammons, Melhuish, Siraj-Blatchford, & Taggart, 2013; Heckman & Raut, 2016; Loeb, Bridges, Bassok, Fuller, & Rumberger, 2007; Sammons, 2010; Sylva, Melhuish, Sammons, Siraj-Blatchford, & Taggart, 2010; Tunçeli & Zembat, 2018) longer preschool attendance has been associated with higher cognitive gains. Growing up in a low-income household has been identified as a risk factor for children’s developments and learning and preschool attendance has been shown to reduce the possible negative effects (Sibley, Thomson, Longo, & Dearing, 2019). Children of disadvantaged families are likely to benefit most from the cognitive domain of the early education and care programs and make progress in a short period of time, which is also observable in the long run (Burger, 2010). Development in all domains, especially in cognitive domain, has been known to vary by attendance to preschool and socioeconomic status. Therefore, the aim of the current study is to investigate the application of cognitive functions performances of children 48 to 66 months old with respect to the duration of preschool attendance and socioeconomic status. A descriptive survey research design with multistage sampling method was employed. Convenience sampling was used to recruit 158 normally developing children aged between 44 and 66 months old from randomly selected 6 schools in Kadıköy, Üsküdar and Maltepe Districts in İstanbul. The participating children were stratified into low ( n = 57), medium ( n = 50) and high SES ( n = 51) groups based on the household income map created by Turkish Statistical Institute. There were 76 girls (% 48,1) and 82 boys (% 51,9). The children were divided into three groups based on the duration of preschool attendance which were one-year attendance (n = 76), two-year attendance (n = 64) and three-year attendance (n = 18). Application of Cognitive Functions Scale (ACFS: Lids & Jepsen, 2003), which was adapted to Turkish by Aksin-Yavuz (2016), and personal information form were used for the data collection. ACFS uses dynamic assessment as a basis to assess the difference between a child’s currently existing skills and his/her skills after training yielding his/her transfer scores (indicating his/her gains after training/intervention), which makes it distinct from standardized testing (Akşin-Yavuz, 2016; AkşinYavuz & Zembat, 2017; Akşin-Yavuz, 2018; Haywood & Lidz, 2007). ACFS consists of two parts, which are “the Core and Supplemental Subscales” and “Behavior Observation Scale”. The Six Tasks Subscales were used in the current study. Cronbach’s Alphas were .749 and .997 for the Core and Supplemental Subscales and the Behavior Observation Scale, respectively. In order to contribute to the intratest reliability of the Six Tasks Subscales and the Behavior Observation Scale, the relationships within each scale were investigated, which yielded moderate and strong positive correlations. For Behavior Observation Scale, the interrater reliability was tested and it was .90 or higher (Akşin-Yavuz, 2016; Akşin-Yavuz & Zembat, 2017). All legal permission processes followed by the researcher to implement the scale with children. Ethical issues considered during data collection process, as for family permission forms and the privacy of the data. Data analyses were done. Due to the findings; the transfer scores (the difference between posttest and pretest scores) of the participating children differed significantly by the duration of preschool attendance at less than the .05 level for Classification, Short-term Auditory Memory, Short-term Visual Memory, Perspective Taking and Verbal Planning subscales of the ACFS, which suggests that an increase in the duration of preschool attendance will probably lead to positive outcomes in cognitive functioning. The application of cognitive functioning performances of the children differed significantly by socioeconomic status at less than the .05 level in all of the subdimensions of ACFS, except for the posttest scores of Sequential Pattern Completion Subscale. There was a significant difference in Shortterm Visual Memory transfer scores in favor of high SES group (p<.05).
