Özet

The new Türkiye Airport Structures Earthquake Code 2020 (TASEC 2020) was published on October 6, 2020. Its purpose is to establish essential rules and minimum conditions for designing new airport structures to withstand earthquake loads, evaluate the seismic performance of existing airfield structures, and retrofit these structures. This study provides a detailed comparison between the Türkiye Building Earthquake Code 2018 (TBEC 2018) and TASEC 2020, focusing on how these standards address seismic safety in airport structures. As the primary standard for seismic design across all building types in Türkiye, TBEC 2018 offers comprehensive guidelines for ensuring structural resilience against earthquakes. However, the unique needs and complexities of airport structures, including terminals, runways, control towers, and ancillary facilities, require tailored approaches, which are outlined in TASEC 2020. The comparison highlights the similarities and differences regarding earthquake load assumptions, design parameters, material requirements, and retrofitting strategies. Additionally, this study examines how the seismic performance evaluation criteria established by TASEC 2020 are integrated within the broader framework of TBEC 2018. To address challenges specific to airfield operations, such as maintaining continuous operation during post-earthquake recovery, TASEC 2020 introduces particular considerations to ensure minimal disruption to aviation services. Furthermore, the study explores the economic impact of the seismic performance evaluation criteria set by TASEC 2020 on airport structure design.
