The Role of Urban Design Workshops in Architectural Education and Collaboration with Local Authorities

Özet
Urban design workshops play a significant role in architectural education by providing practical environments where participants from diverse disciplines collaborate and discuss large-scale design decisions. As an informal educational method, these workshops offer field experience beyond the university setting, allowing students to think on an urban scale, such as streets, neighborhoods, and master plans, and offer the opportunity to reinforce their theoretical knowledge through field trips, analyses, and conceptual projects. Organized in collaboration with local administrations, these workshops bridge architectural education and public policy, promoting mutual learning between students and municipalities. This study examines three urban design workshops held in the Cunda, Maltepe, and Ataşehir districts of Türkiye, coordinated by academics from the Department of Architecture at Maltepe University. Each workshop emphasized design approaches prioritizing public interest and community engagement. Participants included architecture students and recent graduates, whose varied academic levels enhanced teamwork, collaboration, and shared responsibility. Through partnerships with local governments, students interacted with professionals, contributing to participatory and interactive design processes that can inform municipal planning. The workshop process included defining the study area, collecting and analyzing data, conducting site visits, developing design proposals, and presenting final projects. Working with real field data enabled context-sensitive design responses to environmental, social, and spatial conditions. These workshops not only produced diverse urban strategies—from urban planning to tactical urbanism proposals—but also raised awareness among both students and local authorities regarding the potential of collaborative, design-based approaches to shape more inclusive and sustainable urban futures.
