Özet

Old age is a vulnerable period for depression due to chronic illnesses, cognitive decline, social losses, and financial struggles. During this time, depression is often regarded as a normal part of aging, leading to delayed diagnosis and negatively impacting quality of life and daily functioning. Loneliness, social isolation, financial hardships, chronic health conditions, and cognitive impairments are key risk factors for depression among seniors. The prominence of physical symptoms can cause mental health issues to be overlooked. This situation has serious consequences for both individuals and society. Depression increases healthcare costs and workload while reducing social activity among older adults. Therefore, managing geriatric depression requires a multidisciplinary and personalized approach. Along with medication, psychotherapy, social support programs, physical activity, and cognitive exercises are essential for treatment and prevention. Using standardized screening tools in primary healthcare and raising awareness among healthcare providers can aid early detection. Improving access to mental health services, reducing social stigma, and launching awareness campaigns are crucial. Developing policies that promote mental health at national and local levels is vital. Future research should explore how geriatric depression manifests across different cultures, its risk factors, and the effectiveness of non-drug treatments. Ultimately, effective management of geriatric depression relies on early detection, comprehensive intervention, and social and political backing.
